The mosaic classes will cover tuition in a range of different materials and techniques. This will manly include glass tessera and porcelain tile. You will be provided with a base, all the materials you need and the appropriate tools. There will be a demonstration of how to nip up and lay out the materials at the beginning of the session and Michelle will be on hand to help and give advice throughout. Please use the form on the 'Contact' page to ask any questions or to book a place in one of the classes. There will be a maximum of 8 people in each class.
There are no workshop dates at the moment
1. You will need: grout in a small pot, spoon, piece of car sponge, bowl and jug of water, rubber glove. Cover your work area with newspaper as this will be messy.
2. Add water from the jug to the grout, a little at a time. You are aiming for a smooth 'peanut butter' consistancy. You can colour your grout with acrylic paint added in the mix at this stage. The grout will dry lighter than it is when wet.
3. Push the grout into all the gaps with your gloved fingers. Also on the sides of the mosaic.
4. Make sure all your gaps are filled.
5. Using your sponge and tub of water, carefully clean off the excess grout and smooth the sides. Make sure you wring all the water from the sponge when cleaning it inbetween spongings, so the sponge is just damp. Too much water will wash the grout out of the gaps.
6. Leave to settle for about an hour, not in direct sunlight.
7. Polish up with a glass wipe or damp soft cloth.
8. Once dry and clean, paint the back and sides with an acrylic paint colour of your choice. Buy a D ring suitable for the weight of the mosaic.
9. Screw in a 'D ring', make sure the screws are shorter than the thickness of the wooden base.
Remember, if you plan to hang your mosaic outside you will have to paint the back and sides (not the front) with exterior varnish. This will need to be repeated once a year to stop the wet ruining the wood.
This will be an opportunity for you to learn the basics of working with fusible glass and create a variety of different objects. These will include coasters, sun catchers, pendants and frameable artwork. Once constructed during the class, your glass artwork will be fused together in the kiln and ready for you to collect the following week.
